🎧 Alice Coltrane, "The Carnegie Hall Concert". Recorded in 1971 fresh off the release of her landmark "Journey...." LP, Coltrane brought a double trio including Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders for a free jazz/skronk master class. Four extended workouts, two of them written by her late husband, ebb and flow and explode. Sanders might have invented some new notes at this show. Just released on Impulse after 50 years on the shelf. A must.

Quick note - the recording is from a reference mix as the master tape was lost. So this is far from an audiophile recording. Some of the instruments are buried to the point of non-existence (Sanders fife in "Africa"), and there is an anomaly in the tape reel that causes regular dropouts for the first half of "Shika-Lova". But you get past that stuff, it's an awesome experience.
