While the hero of the American Taliban was being arrested in GA, we were at Meet the Teachers night at our kids high school. Even in blood red Indiana, where teachers are now obligated to out trans kids to their parents, the flags of free thought still fly in our district’s public schools.

🎧 Margaret Glaspy, "Echo the Diamond." After a foray into more electronic art-pop territory, Glaspy has packed away her "Maschine" and gone back to her guitar, and produced a terrific set of alt-rock. Hey - any artist that starts a song with the lyric "don't be a dick" has got my attention. But she already had it. Her debut album "Emotions and Math" is stellar as well.

Our undying thanks!

🎧 Porcupine Tree, “Signify”. This was the first PT album I ever heard, back in 97 just after it came out. I couldn’t believe music this good still existed, especially when good prog had become barren. Steven Wilson re-framed the genre, adding just enough heart to keep it from sounding cold and distant. And the musicianship, damn. A great jumping on point if you’re unfamiliar. The titular instrumental, “Sever”, “Sleep…”, “Waiting” are all great tracks. Dig in.

TFW bullshit anti-wokeism and "think of the children" jingoism inch ever so close to your own doorstep. Fishers in just one district north of me. On a good day I can ride my bike there.

A tshirt company, with Green's blessing, is already producing these t-shirts:

🎧 Black Market Brass, "Undying Thirst". Faithful-to-a-point Afrobeat/Afrojazz from this huge Minneapolis ensemble. While paying homage to the godfathers of the genre, including but not exclusively recording live to tape, there are some psych-rock elements laid throughout the songs that come as unexpected, but aren't so shocking that they make you forget what this band is really all about. This is very, very good.

🎧 Various Artists, "The Complete Stax/Volt Singles 1959-1968" (Disc 4). What better way to kick off a "new music Friday" than with music older than I am? I remember getting this 9-disc box as a gift when it first came out and losing myself in it for weeks. What an amazing chronicle of R&B/Soul music. Rufus, Otis, Booker T, Sam & Dave, Carla et al. A great Friday soundtrack.

🎧 Dream Theater Playlist 1 (90 mins.)

I think as I get older, I am losing interest in most prog. I don't have time for a 9 minute song. DT was a go-to band for me for many many years until it all started to sound the same. Every once in a while I need to spin them back up, because, damn, those guys can play. If even just for the flash factor, there are few better bands.

This guy has been a MAJOR influence on me. I would walk out of a RUSH concert and lament about what a shit musician I was and tell my mates "i'm going home to burn my gear now." Ged's approach to everything impacted me as a player and as a band member. I learned how manage bass and keys by studying him, he taught me the "impossible" was possible. Thanks Ged, and Happy 70th (July 29)

Boat day. Lake Patoka. I dubbed our craft “the wang dang sweet toon pang”.

Follow up to my earlier . My amazing wife drove 35 minutes each way to bring me lunch. A new york reuben from the only place in town that really knows how to make one. Also potato pancakes and black & white cookies. She really loves me.

Scrolling thru a collection of photos I found this. This is the one that best represents my marriage. She always has that look, “you’re good, I got you”. I wonder sometimes if she really knows how much I lean on her. She’s my rock AND my soft place to land.

FM stations used to use the "less talk more rock" tagline. So we tried it on the new episode of the Lets Play Ten podcast. We squeezed twice the music into the same 2 hour period and we are so psyched for folks to hear all this fresh indie rock and roll. Its one of our more diverse playlists so there is something for everyone. Check it out and if you hear something you dig, please support the artists with a music or merch purchase. Thanks to all!

Just returned from a few days at “Chain O’Lakes” state park. Four of the lakes have been stricken with blue-green algae, as thick as pea soup in some areas, and the fish started dying this morning. We went kayaking today and it was a real slog at point. Moving east into a long channel it finally cleared up but there were moments when we didn’t think we could paddle thru.

Mother Nature blew hard enough on our anniversary plans to knock out power all over the city including our neighborhood. We had to cancel our boating day. We salvaged the night with a visit to a new to us restaurant. We drank, ate oysters and AMAZING paella, and my wife made a majorra her bitch. I wonder if they’re opened for breakfast.

🎧 YES, "Going For The One". Chris Squire passed 8 years ago today. Countless bass players, myself included, studied his work as part of our "onboarding". His unique and melodic bass lines, his carefully crafted tone, and his effortless joy for the instrument made him a major influence on me. GFTO is my favorite YES album. From the propulsive rock of the title track to the epic majesty of "Awaken", this is one of Chris' finest hours.
