(Tomorrow, though, is BookTube day: new and hopefully markedly improved content, with one reading for the public and others for my Patrons ahead of public promotion. So at least I'm ahead *somewhere* in this process!)

Started the day with some editing projects - one paid, one volunteer for SFWA, where I'm on pubs crew and edit some of the blog pieces.

I love editing other people's work, because I have a strong eye for what others are aiming for, & what needs to be done technically to harmonize form & intention.

But when it's my own work? Ugh. Everything takes a million times longer. It's not about "murdering my darlings"; it's about accepting that the editing is *finished*, and letting go. 🙃 Back to it now!

Learned today that a highly accomplished person in my field, who I admired but didn't know closely, passed away. Much too young.

A seemingly flawless career, family, and appearance all became prison walls for a hurting soul.

Please don't assume anybody is doing ok, no matter how good things seem. You don't know unless you ask.

Check in with folks.
Tell friends and family you love them.

Be fiercely real with the time you have.

Today's feature article at , by Seráh Blain, offers a glimpse into humanitarian and mutual aid work in Haiti. I'm not sure if it's exactly in the profile of , but I was certainly heartened to read about on-the-ground efforts for change.

I've been doing so much work on the final novel proofs this week. Almost ready to let them go, and definitely looking forward to the new work I'll be able to do after I've sent them out, but this is it - this is the best thing I think I've written - so I just want everything to be as sharp as possible.

Whatever labours of love you've got on the go (and yes, I am counting your morning coffees: what kind of a monster would I be otherwise?) may they all nourish you well.

Morning, CoSo. 💫

OH DEAR. THIS POST WAS SET TO SELF-DETONATE 💣 💥 🔥

"How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me."

I'm at a restless, pacing hour in my day's writing & editing, and the latest mountain fire isn't helping. Might go for a wee walk before the next stint. (Class cancelled at 5:30, so more writing time for me!)

Thank you, @MLClark.

As an emotional and reactive wad, I have to remind myself that I'm really not all that important. To 'get over oneself,' it helps to first deflate the ego.

Harm reduction walks in step with tempered reason and sense of self.

Hate is a means to an end, but it's far less sustainable. Understanding and compassion doesn't mean 'be a doormat.' It means discerning causation, and administering preventative care.

Fck modern society, but my 💔 for just about everyone.

Good morning, CoSo!

Life is a long string of technical difficulties. Sometimes all you can do is use the opportunity to work on your patience and just stand by.

Morning, CoSo! 💫

Who's got two thumbs, and a terrifically bleak article for today, involving the IPCC's latest climate report and the limits on government will-to-change that make even this clear call to more comprehensive environmental action a near-impossible but still essential struggle for us all?

Why yes, it's a-me!

(What a world, eh?)

Hey you. Yeah, you. Staring again at the brink of that downward spiral. You know it well. You've been down there before. You know it's no fun.

Take a pause. Do something small that will improve your situation. Doesn't have to be anything major. Doesn't have to take much effort at all. Clean that desk. Put those dishes away. Throw on a load of laundry. Take that knick-knack that's been sitting out and find it a new home. Anything to improve your life for you. You'll be glad you did!

Okay. Newsletter time.

This is the first and most personal of the essays and BookTube episodes I'll be sharing around the launch of Children of Doro, my space opera inspired by The Brothers Karamazov, on May 4.

Deep, heavy topics here - drawing in part from a really tough childhood for mental health, with plenty of long term consequences.

You've been warned!

Morning beautiful people. Here are some animal friends I made this weekend. Whatever happens this week, remember that there's a world beyond all human drama, calling to us if we need a break.

(I also just enjoy the reminder that there are many cultures in which men weep in mainstream media! Openly! Goofily! And have silly, sentimental passions! While still being considered very professional in other contexts! What a difference from Western films and TV series, where men are definitely allowed to be emotional - so long as there are weapons or some other form of combat, competition, or hardship concurrently involved. 🙃)

Divorce Attorney Shin isn't the kind of show I usually watch, but man, I love how many different cultural conversations coexist globally.

In some ways South Korea's treatment of women is more traditionally sexist, & in other ways there's a more mature delicacy around key adult themes.

Meanwhile here in Colombia, there's a famous telenovela, routinely rebroadcast, where the Virgin Mary helps suffering people with... a very different approach to domestic strife.

Takes all types to make a world.

Listening To The Creatures Of The World

Innovative digital technologies are enabling us to decode nature’s sounds, leading to exciting ideas about planetary governance that incorporates nonhuman voices.

“Nonhumans were once believed to be largely deaf and mute, but now we are realizing that in nature, silence is an illusion.”
