As Google search continues to devolve, are we going to keep using "google" as a verb?

Or should we start popularizing "let me trashfire that for you" instead? 🤔 For integrity's sake?

(I'd suggest "dumpster dive", but you can still find some pretty good things up top in the real-life version, if you go to the right ones!)

@MLClark I like trashfire. That’s definitely what it is. I’m so tired of all the Reddit links and now the AI is pulling answers from there. For example, you should put glue in your pizza sauce to make it stickier. WTF?

@WendyForbes

...Yes, but will it be *pineapple*-flavoured glue. 🤔 That is the pressing pizza question!

@MLClark oh no. You really wanna be starting something? 😂

@MLClark

Hahaha… well put. Google as a verb should now mean profiting by wasting someone’s time by violating their privacy and distracting them with endless garbage.

Same with all the feudal overlords of the internet (FB/Amazon/Apple/Microsoft)

@MLClark

I almost never use it anymore, and it seems discordant to say something like "I google that on duckduckgo"

Perhaps best is to stop referring to it at all, as any mention makes it seem like a normal and reasonable choice.

More and more often I find myself saying "I asked an AI", not that they are any more trustworthy, but at least they are of the Now, not the good ole pre-y2k days.

@ceorl

Oh, I like the "I asked an AI" solution. It's upfront, and unflinching about all the potential problems with whatever data you're about to relay next.

Much better than the vague "I looked it up online", which covers all manner of digital illiteracy sins.

I will put that into practice, thanks!

@MLClark

Cool!

While AIs are as prone to evil manipulation as a search engine, I like the fact that they are conversational, so you can drill in and surface inconsistencies through follow up questions, often reversing the original response. ;)

@ceorl

They are great fun! :)

I really appreciate the brain trust here, and the wealth of different perspectives that can be learned from when trying to navigate the strangeness of Life, The Universe, and Everything.

I'm super thankful when people offer ideas from their own experience, share constructive criticism, and sit in dialogue to come up with best practices.

So thanks so much for a proactive solution to a silly problem, and for routinely offering fresh vantage points on weary days!
