I'm chuckling at how quintessentially US-centric eclipse conspiracy theories are.

Colombian newspapers recently suggested a city six hours from Medellín where people might get a sliver of the view, but also pointed out that people can "just" wait until 2044, when one will be visible here.

But if an eclipse is happening over 'Murica, THAT'S IT. That's the bat signal for the apocalypse! 🤣 If you do plan to ascend, though, please be sure to keep the rest of us in mind when writing your wills. 😘

@MLClark
I personally want to go to Iceland -- on a luxury cruise -- for the eclipse that will affect them in 2026, I believe. I want to be a global eclipse tourist. Maybe I'd even have an entourage.

@MLClark I have heard some doozies. Many were saying it would trigger major earthquakes. Those are being bolstered by yesterday's New Jersey quake.

@Graci @MLClark
People around here have been joking about "oooo an earthquake, better go pray."

At this point, it's gotten hard to tell when someone is joking or serious! 🙄 🤷 😂

@Graci

:/ Again I'm left to think that maybe we aren't ready for democracy, if the electorate still includes that level of profound scientific illiteracy.

(Which sucks, because the dominant alternative is worse. We are effed.)

@MLClark Very clever, but you see, the earth is flat, so the eclipse will be visible everywhere. Elvis told me so on the set of the moon landing hoax.

@JakeA

🤔 Was that before or after Elvis fought undead mummies with a Black JFK in a southern US nursing home?

@MLClark Before. Elvis today is a reptillian. I'm talking about the real Elvis, not the one running the US government with the grey aliens.

@JakeA

An important distinction! The mole people run a really good disinformation campaign, but if we don't call out what chem trails are doing to our whistleblowers today, we'll never be able to stop Stage 2 of the vax chip invasion. But clearly I'm preaching to the choir, so just tell Tupac I said hello when you see him at the next meeting!

@MLClark Changelings aren't real, the Dominion War never happened!

@MLClark
I think it's direct proportion with how scared and sick we are. Superstition spreads like wildfire in strange or hard times.

@JLong

Agreed. NPR's Throughline had a piece on astrology a few years back that changed my feelings about its popularity. Apparently there is data correlating a higher interest in horoscopes with levels of surrounding socioeconomic insecurity.

So rather than scoff at superstition, it does benefit us to pay attention to when and why superstition is ever on the rise.

@MLClark
I've read similar studies. Cults and UFO sightings increase, too. The sun plays such a huge role in ancient cultures, an eclipse couldn't be anything but bad-news. Animal and human sacrifices were self-defense.
