βΌοΈ So, I'm reading an LA Times article on the "white savior" trope in Hollywood films and TV. The writer was going down the list, and at every entry I nodded "yep, yep, oh yeah." Then the writer got to the last one: Game Of Thrones.
Wut? Again, as our GoT expert and doyenne, did you notice this?
I'm not as experted as @kenc313 is but it does have that problem.
Daenyrs is white and saves Missandie (sp?) who is black. And then there's the Unsullied guy, the boyfriend of Missandie, who is also black and is also "liberated." I can't remember if all of the Unsullied are POC.
Wowzers. Thanks, both of you. I really have to watch it now as sociology as much as entertainment.
I assume this is the title of rule? White girl comes among the savages and becomes their queen?
@LiberalLibrarian @kenc313
Ya know, I never thought of the Dothraki as savages but now that I think about it, yeah they are portrayed that way. Eat food with their hands, wear little clothing, "take" women, etc. etc.
I try my best not to put such labels on cultures but the indoctrination starts at such an early age and it takes a lot of willingness to expand one's knowledge.
