Over and over again, I see people trying to make predictions and characterize trends and public opinion on the assumption that "as things are, so shall they ever be"—that is, that what are perceived as basic structures and attitudes in society do not change in response to events.

But of course they do. Change is the most constant of things, and trends change in response to events that may not even seem related to them at all.
