Someone posted a meme today that said tradition is just peer pressure from dead people.
I love that.
@holon42
It wasn’t meant as a criticism, I don’t think. It’s simply another way of looking at the concept.
true. and there's a point to it for sure. we can push back against following tradition mindlessly.
but when it says it's "just peer pressure" it's reducing tradition in a way that discounts it completely.
hence my reaction. i distrust reductionism of any kind. brain = computer, animal = automaton, universe = hologram, etm, etm, etm.
a particularly egregious one from some past feminists: male = rapist.
the list goes on. i'm reactive about it🤣🤣🤣
@Jeber
cute, but shallow.
it can be abusive, yet tradition carries our knowledge about the world, culture, and how things have been. what worked, what didn't. how bad people can be and how good.
without tradition we are adrift in à boundless sea of spacetime, encapsulated merely by what is, having no understanding of how or why.
the meme's point: like everything human, it can become like peer pressure.
so, we respond seeing that it contains errors that need correction for a good society.
