I like to remind evangelicals that if they allow religion to get involved in politics, the government will get involved in religion.
One small example.
The church used to determine holy days ("remember the Sabbath to keep it holy") but now the government determines holy days (holidays). The government only respects religion's ability to keep its people in line.

@Jeber yes, consider China's determination to choose the next Dalai Lama, having already imposed their chosen Panchen Lama and virtually imprisoned the one chosen in the traditional way. and the government is supposedly atheist, so what's their legitimacy?

@Jeber
Is it my imagination or did the serious line crossing with church & stat start with Bush 43 & his "faith based initiatives"? I said when he started that crap it was going to cause trouble & I think I was right.
We really need to break the lines back up again. IMO, that is.

In 1981 Barry Goldwater:
"The great decisions of Government cannot be dictated by the concerns of religious factions. This was true in the days of Madison and it is just as true today.
We have succeeded for 205 years in keeping the affairs of State separate from the uncompromising idealism of religious groups and we must not stop now.
To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers built this democratic republic.
