@darcrich "... the right of the people to keep and use toasters shall not be infringed."
@Anemone I live just a few hours' drive from Canada. I've been there a couple of times. I know it's a healthier society than ours. There is no need to rub my nose in it!
@kismatt @redenigma Pretty soon the governments of Central and South America will be offering Americans incentives to move down there and repopulate their countries.
@mcfate And we should all be grateful for that, at least all of us who love cheeses.
@redenigma 100,000? I heard it was 100 million!
The sanewashing of pretending Harris's economic plan even matters when her opponent is "fascist to the core," to quote one who knows him. Do people actually mean to say, "I know he's a fascist but I want cheap gas"?
Even Hitler's fans in Weimar Germany had more decency than that -- they cloaked their fascism in dreams of restored national glory. A German Colin Wilson talked to after the war described the excitement of being in a pivotal historical movement, even if it was "unfortunate" for some.
@DavidSalo A problematic object for allegiance: a document thrown together in haste and in secret, with obvious faults, some of which have been corrected. Among its contradictions is the makeup of the US Senate, so hostile to equal representation that the states are forbidden to construct their senates along the same lines.
The older I get, the more I see the Pledge as a form of idolatry, which I think is a grave sin.
@mcfate "There is no definitive answer when it comes to the voracity of the NSA warning ...."
Yes, it's hard to tell how voracious a security warning is.
@RavenCutrereULC Damn, now I gotta go get my creep-o-meter recalibrated. Think it might even have blown a fuse.
If you think the #fossilfuel industries will come to their senses and stop pumping CO2 and CH4 into the atmosphere before it's too late - let me assure you that you're very wrong.
A key oil and gas industry group has devised a plan to dismantle Biden-era climate regulations, including on methane emissions, according to an investigation published Friday in The Washington Post.

@DavidSalo YMMV. Voting in WA is, as I've said, less stressful than getting a haircut. For me, the relief of having finally decided who to vote for in a local race isn't much compared to waiting twelve days to find out whether my country's going fascist or not.
@matuzalem Well, if Lev Pandas says it's so .....
@DavidSalo WA's system, vote by mail (or dropbox, even better), is the best I've seen by far. Ridiculously convenient, no standing in line, you can track your ballot's progress, and if anything goes wrong they'll work with you to fix it.
@redenigma @mcfate That was before the constitution was even written, let alone adopted. Irrelevant now.
Does a true religion need the power of the state behind it?
If we want our religion to guide the state's actions, we already have a way to do that: vote as our religion bids us.
Vote in #s too large to manipulate.
Consider: Which party gerrymanders battleground states, & which supports independent commissions for fair district mapping? Which party restricts voting access, & which ensures every vote counts? Which has undermined election results—violently? Which shows disdain for democratic checks & balances? Which stacked the Supreme Court, shifting its balance? And lastly, which party takes away civil rights, & which expands freedoms & upholds them? Choose wisely.
@DavidSalo It's the old Republican playbook: complain about an agency, then try to "fix" it by cutting its funds and interfering with its work.
Republicans in the California legislature used to play it with school funds: hold back as much as they could, then say the schools weren't doing a good enough job to deserve any more money. Congressional conservatives have done it to the Postal Service, imposing financial rules no other carrier has to follow. It's a kind of stealth nihilism.
@Cosmichomicide Mm-hm. I can take Carville's prediction down to the local (unionized!) Starbucks and trade it for a cup of coffee if I add two dollars.
I'm grateful to @mcfate for his exemplary stoicism and I'm not paying any attention to any predictions.
I'm going to keep on fighting for two reasons: we need Harris to win to have any chance at all of keeping democracy, and we need to bury MAGA so deep you could build an outhouse over it and never hear the plop.
@Rocker Yeah, I'm sure a ban on news stories will stop people from speculating and coming up with their own theories. No one will think up ways to talk about it while appearing to talk about something else, no sirree.🙄
Fascists are so stupid.
Grew up in Cupertino before Apple, lived in Berkeley, now retired in South Puget Sound. Pronouns he/him.
