Pirate Compensation for Injuries

For obvious reasons, an injured pirate was no longer as effective as an able bodied seamen, and for the most part could no longer carry out his designated duties, but he was nonetheless compensated for his injuries. Providing compensation to injured pirates was part and parcel of the success of pirates; it encouraged risk taking, which was an essential component to the pirate strategy.

Here are some aspects of pirate ship democracy

Captain
The captain was elected, just as the U.S. president. The captain was granted total power only during times of distress.

Quartermaster
The quartermaster resembled a judge in settling shipmate disputes and preventing the captain from overstepping his authority.

Crew
Crew members were assigned certain duties. They also had a say in the ship's affairs. In peacetime, major issues were decided through democratic voting, including where to raid.

Fact: A pirate ship from the 1700s had more appreciation and practice of democracy, than the modern day Republican party.
