#education I will probably make a few people mad at me for saying that I fully support the decision by SCOTUS to end affirmative action for colleges and to allow service providers to refuse service if goes against their values!
Affirmative action for universities began in 2003 and in these 20 years it certainly helped many minority candidates access higher education!
But it was time to end it and base their acceptance on academic merit rather than skin color!
May the best candidate win!😜
@pendrag No it had everything to do with her beliefs in general, including religion. If I don't accept marriage between same sexes that's my right to do so and no govt will tell me what to believe!
What's next? Thought Police?
@Helveticus
Do not mistake a personal belief/religious choice, with a business choice.
The law would prevent her business from posting ‘Christian Only’ the same that a business can not post ‘whites only’ sign. However, it does not restrict her business rights to decline to provide services for any/all/no reason.
The ruling even noted the difference.
@Helveticus If the best would win then there’d be no problem. We know that’s not what happens. It’s always been about equity. I’m certainly not mad, but I disagree.
@Helveticus I mean, as white people who directly benefit from systemic racism, I think this is a take that looks terrible. And in no way is it acceptable to just decide to refuse service based on a fictional scenario that never happened. Until discrimination affects you directly, I suspect this will be your stance. You’re entitled to it I suppose. I just wouldn’t announce it.
@SaltyVeruca There you go, I fully accept that you disagree but that will not change my firm belief in personal freedom to decide according to my values!
After all, Restaurants can easily refuse service if you are not properly dressed and nobody finds that discriminatory!
It is called private service and the owner should decide who to give service to, just as you don't just let anybody enter your house, your car, and even your business !😍
@SaltyVeruca Just remember that some Black students were admitted not due to their academic excellence but because they are athletes! When asked to comment on a football game, most of these (college) students can't even speak properly!
@Helveticus
It's not SCOTUS ending a mandate that universities have affirmative action programs.
It's the government now prohibiting private organizations from making private decisions of how they want to craft their incoming classes.
And SCOTUS did NOT prohibit legacy admissions, where children of alumni are given favorable treatment. Since only white people were admitted when the parents and grandparents of those kids graduated, it's essentially affirmative action favoring white people.
@Helveticus Ruby Bridges is 68 yrs old. It takes generations to get rid of that level of hate. We have a outbreak in white nationalism. It will be time to end it when the majority of Americans can be trusted to do the right thing. Otherwise they will discriminate just like they did before.
@Helveticus
If that is true, then force the higher education institutions to stop asking for Race/Sex on the admission form; and remove the ability for predatory loan systems for that education.
As for a business right to refuse; that should not have gone to the Courts. Even that law the person disputed had allowances for their refusal; and it has nothing to do with religion. They just wanted to be a 15min Karen.
