Christopher Columbus' credentials as an "Italian" are pretty questionable. No such state as Italy existed in his time. He was born in the Republic of Genoa, which did not have close links to other Italian states; standard Italian (=Florentine) was not the principal language.
Columbus spent much of his life as a naturalized subject of Spain, sailed under a Spanish flag, and claimed the territories he discovered for Spain, and died in Spain. He has more reason to be considered Spanish.
