I think it's most like an abusive domestic relationship. The abuser has to keep making the victim accept worse and worse degradation, but does it in tiny increments. Any MAGA person asked ten years ago whether they would vote for someone who did-this or said-that would say, "hell, no," but here we are with half the country sitting like frogs in a boiling pot.
