Okee-dokee. Here we go.

I've used this occasionally at other people's places, but critical mass appears to have been reached with people wanting to send me Logic sessions, so it's time to start a properly steep learning curve.

I think maybe the version of Logic I've used is a bit older than this one ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Some initial thoughts:

I really dig some of the stuff I've found so far (such as the way it interacts with my control surface to colour the tracks ๐Ÿ‘‡), but stuff like the routing is very weird.

It's unsurprisingly tough going to break 30 years of Pro Tools...

Starting to get the hang of Logic a bit more now. Some neat tools...

My only small nitpick so far is that the menu and toolbar system is a little opaque. I expect there's a way to customise things more, though, so there may be a way to make it suit dopey old me yet ๐Ÿ˜‚

Whenever I think I find something in Logic that I can triumphantly shout, "Aha! Pro Tools rules!" about, I find a way around it.

Clip gain, for example: there's no little handle on the clips, but 2 keystrokes give you a tool to do it.

Then I find things that are very cool indeed: There's a tool that strips out silences and trims the clips automatically, and you can batch-add fades at the start and ends of multiple clips at the same time.

Aaaand, I just this second learned that you can really easily clip gain multiple clips simultaneously. ๐Ÿคฏ

Gee willikers, I've only had Logic for 5 days, but I'm already somehow on my second version ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

How funny (strange funny, not funny funny):

I discovered today while trying to start a job that my Pro Tools license hasn't been updating despite them taking the money. They fixed it within a couple of hours, which is great, but I'm feeling a little uneasy that they've changed something in their system that's gonna make this happen every month.

Only 6 days after starting to learn Logic, too. Quite a coincidence...

I deliberately started to learn Logic with a complicated, kinda neo-soul song with lots of tracks so that I'd come up against as many things as possible.

Today, I'm back in my more comfy rock/pop-punk space with some ideas about the most efficient workflow, and all the prep went super fast.

It's getting to be more about the music than the software already, and that's the goal. ๐Ÿ‘

@DyDave

It's getting harder and harder to tell Logic and Garageband apart. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@q00w2

It really is. I'm constantly impressed by how powerful Garageband is, too. Some yoofs of my acquaintance use it to make their music and it does a heap of cool stuff for them.

@DyDave

Have you used Mainstage? I have a lot of fun with that. ๐Ÿ‘

@q00w2

I tried Mainstage once, but I've been an Ableton Live user for, like, 15 years and that seems to do everything for me that Mainstage would and a bit more.

@DyDave

Yeah, Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) swears by it. Mainstage is great for kicking around ideas on.

@q00w2

Mainstage is heaps more affordable too.

Ableton was pretty reasonable back in the noughties, and the updates for existing users aren't too expensive, but a new licence for the full Suite version's over $AU1,000 nowadays ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@DyDave

I had Logic Pro YEARS ago (so old I set up a virtual machine in case I ever wanted to play with it againโ€”weโ€™ll see ๐Ÿ˜)

At the time it was pretty wicked, but Iโ€™m no musician and mostly took midi stuff and messed around changing the instruments and whatnot.

The most I can say is it kept me off the streets!

๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜€

I've been a Pro Tools guy for decades, but I'm trying to learn how to mix in Logic because I find that a lot of young artists are using it now and want to send me sessions so I can see what they've done instead of bouncing out the tracks.

Like anything, it feels like it takes forever to learn, but not really and I dig it so far ๐Ÿ‘

@DyDave

I started out with Logic, and still today use it for many things.
But my day to day DAW, for noodling around or trying out presets and plug-ins is Reaper.
