In 1829-1830, Mexico abolished slavery.

This hurt the feelings of immigrants to Mexico from the United States who wanted to protect their 'property' in slaves.

Accordingly, in 1835-1836, they launched an insurrection against Mexico to form their own government which would protect slavery.

The first thing they did on setting up their new "Republic of Texas" was to enshrine in its constitution the right to own slaves.

That's what anybody commemorating "Texas Independence" is celebrating.
