He was, quite literally, detained in and extradited from Cabo Verde at the request of the US government, despite not having a formal extradition treaty.
Apparently it's considered not the best option for escaping the US authorities. Yes, there are sites about this. No, I'm not going on the run - this was actually a bit of a story.
Note, if you escape to a country that has no extradition treaty with USA - it still doesn't mean that the country won't hand you over if they don't want there.
Also, many corrupt countries will bleed off your funds, then they will kick you out. #Diddy

I for one am disappointed that the imminent national Schadenfreude holiday has been cancelled. I thought it was gonna happen tomorrow.
But that it was by the court itself is even worse.
I had a TS/SCI clearance for 30 years. I went to court and testified against serial killers that were put to death.
But, part of my working life has been a fraud because the gov let one person steal SCI & Q clearance documents and walk around free.
