#Asheville cut off from world; damage estimated $100B in South

There are no words. Except gratitude that all I know/love are safe.
Makes me want to fill my van with 5 gallon bottles of water & head south.
No toilets or drinking water. Boil warning, but no power. Water shut off in many areas. There was a fair amount of bottled water but you had to be able to get to it.
We stayed at the BP because the owner came in and opened up for cash, so we had water, food (sorta) and such. The Ingalls were giving away their perishables, but they were out pretty fast.
No real way to get trucks in ATM. 😕
No gouging that we experienced, BTW. Asheville has really pulled together.
@Bix we are just starting to get roads in Vermont fixed from flooding last summer. People vastly underestimate recovery effort needed. And FEMA doesn’t replace not having insurance.
More tears. You can’t imagine the magnificent art lost from this area. 💫
@Bix this is so sad.
but i suspect it still won't stop the oil/gas industry from expanding & making this more common & much worse. there's too much denial of consequences here
@Bix
Got a brief call this morning from friend in Hendersonville. So glad he and his young family are safe. Feeling deep sadness for Asheville residents.
@Mfieck
It is just awful.
It is hard for me to comprehend that that cities and towns can be destroyed 500 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. #ClimateCrisis
@Bix
Climate change was a future horror...this is that future.
Just came from there. They are still at the water rescue stage. Pretty big concern will be sanitation - we didn't find a flushing toilet until well into SC.
Most places are either out of gas or have gas but no power to pump it. Shelters are full, as are hotels, but again - no water, no power, no cell.
Good on Joe. Asheville and surrounds will never be the same. 😭
