I have been thinking about this community a lot since I joined a few days ago. To my fellow Twitter migrants, I think we need to remember that there was a community here before us with their own vibe, rules, attitudes and behaviors that existed before we joined. We can’t just show up and start acting like this is still Twitter. Read the room, things are different here. I think you will find that it is actually quite nice that it is a different place.
@BipolarArtist one thing I've learned here is that social media can work without an algorithm. If you put the information out there people will self sort and find people and places they like. It's a little more work on the front end, but the point of this site isn't keeping you online to harvest your data. It's to provide a place for people to make real connections. I much prefer this.
@WanderingDabbit I agree. Another good example of “the users are the algorithm” is Reddit and their system of up and down voting. It fairly reliably elevates good content and diminishes bad content. Users are pretty smart.
@WanderingDabbit that pull of mindlessly opening an app when you don’t realize it is scary. I have moved app locations on my phone before too. My relationship with this place feels healthy and happy.
@BipolarArtist That's my 1st step in getting rid of a social media app. I replaced twitter with coso. I'm happier with it. Twitter is 3 screens away on my phone.
