I have been thinking about this community a lot since I joined a few days ago. To my fellow Twitter migrants, I think we need to remember that there was a community here before us with their own vibe, rules, attitudes and behaviors that existed before we joined. We can’t just show up and start acting like this is still Twitter. Read the room, things are different here. I think you will find that it is actually quite nice that it is a different place.

@BipolarArtist Nicely said. Magnanimous posts like this from cool new Cosonauts get an instant follow 👍

@BipolarArtist well said friend. These peeps just might have it figured out

@BipolarArtist we are happy to welcome all the new people, and want you all to feel at home. I definitely agree to the end that this is not the bird site. It’s kinda the antithesis of the bird site, without focusing on what the bird site is or isn’t. When I joined almost 4 years ago, people were welcoming, warm, inviting. Looking for meaningful interactions. That continues today, and I believe will continue with the new members. It’s a breath of fresh air. Welcome to CoSo!

@DanKravetsky thank you so much! Breath of fresh air is the right description. Everyone has been so welcoming to me. I just want new people to reciprocate that kindness as well.

@BipolarArtist with more reminders like yours and others, I really think that will begin to happen ❤️

@BipolarArtist I do believe that will happen. It’s the energy that it’s built on. It’s the lack of algorithms. Lol, when I joined, I didn’t know I’d be one of the ones jumping in to welcome new people, and help give them information on how to navigate. Yet here I am, looking for people to welcome. The energy becomes contagious.

@BipolarArtist YES! I'm also a migrant who is admittedly still straddling the border and using each platform for different reasons. Eventually I may jump 100% here. But the vibe is different (in a GOOD way!)

@BipolarArtist Fair enough, but I did expect this place to be a lot less disability hostile. I mean, com on, the color scheme lifted from Hotblack Desiato's stuntship is actually PAINFUL to look at.

@Morticia91 I think patience and a positive attitude in making suggestions for how to improve would go a long way. Nothing is static, as the user base grows I imagine that there will be updates to try to accommodate all users. Everyone and everything is a work in progress.

@BipolarArtist Fair enough, but there's no place to even make suggestions or ask questions if you're not a paying pro user. That just feels like extortion. Oh, you can't spare $5 per month right now? Pandemic? Unemployment? Tough sh*t.

@Morticia91 I’m a pro user, I will suggest more color palettes that accommodate visually impaired users. Just try to relax and enjoy yourself here. It really is a nice place.

@BipolarArtist one thing I've learned here is that social media can work without an algorithm. If you put the information out there people will self sort and find people and places they like. It's a little more work on the front end, but the point of this site isn't keeping you online to harvest your data. It's to provide a place for people to make real connections. I much prefer this.

@WanderingDabbit I agree. Another good example of “the users are the algorithm” is Reddit and their system of up and down voting. It fairly reliably elevates good content and diminishes bad content. Users are pretty smart.

@BipolarArtist I know one thing I felt when I came here at first was really a kind of withdraw. I first noticed it with Facebook. I moved my icon for loading it on my phone and didn't realize I was hitting it without even knowing it. It startled me. I still have twitter for news that I've cultivated, but I never interact with users over there.

@WanderingDabbit that pull of mindlessly opening an app when you don’t realize it is scary. I have moved app locations on my phone before too. My relationship with this place feels healthy and happy.

@BipolarArtist That's my 1st step in getting rid of a social media app. I replaced twitter with coso. I'm happier with it. Twitter is 3 screens away on my phone.

@BipolarArtist Thank you.

I got here less than a month ago from Twitter, and the one thing I'm not really into talking about is Twitter. There are so many better topics.

@eyrea agreed! I have even made the decision to stop using that word. Just say “other social media.” Don’t fuel the beast.
