Chart position! It's arbitrary and most likely temporary, but I'll take it just the same.

I think that Billy Joel doesn't get enough credit for his lyrics - mostly because he mostly writes love songs of one form or another. But he uses a device almost no one else does - when he gets to the chorus he sings the title of the song, but it's actually part of a larger sentance.

In full, "Have I waited too Long to Turn the Lights Back On." In doing so he plays on the expectation of hope in the title when it might not even be there. It's a brilliant use of language.

This is actually a pretty decent song once you get past two things: Playboi Carti's incessant use of auto-tune, and the fact that it appears that Madonna now has a silver grill.

You're a white woman in your 60's. You look good but a grill? Seriously?

It's The Weeknd's song and he shines, as he usually does.

One of the great unrecognized bands of the 1990's was Jawbox. I absolutely loved that band. I use their song "Savory" as my ringtone for important calls - that is not a song you can ignore.

Their lead singer/guitarist J. Robbins has a new solo album out, which I'm now giving a 2nd listen to today. This is fantastic stuff.

As funny as it would be to have my last post about the small earthquake we had Friday up there as the last thing I said for a while, I instead am listening to the new J Mascis album.

I'm happy with this.

Taylor Swift and New Album - Blog #5

I'm doing two topics this blog. Taylor Swift is not appearing on my next album.

I have been a songwriter for 45 years. I can still remember bits and pieces of my early jazz pieces, but when I was fifteen years of age I actually wrote a song about a girl who had broken up with me...
