Green Day and Sleater-Kinney have new albums out this week.

The guys in Green day has this punk-pop formula down pat, and they execute it quite well. Lots of damn fine songs on the record.

But I think the Sleater-Kinney record is better, even if much less mainstream.

The Green Day album kind of melds with everything else they've ever done, which you must admit works for them.

But the Sleater-Kinney album is one I'll come back to again and again.

As promised, here is the link to the blog version of Radio Free California Episode 2403. This includes the playlist, radio station notes about our various shows running this week, and a video I think you'll enjoy.

No cheap shots this week. MLK day and the Iowa Caucuses are on the same day. That's irony enough for me.

Enjoy!

As per usual my blog version will be up later today with station programming notes for the week.

There are TWO bands called "Whom Gods Destroy". I'll be playing one of them on next week's Radio Free California. The one the dropped their first single yesterday.

Good night my fellow Cosonauts. I leave you with a band that's local to me but I have high hopes for.

The Umbrellas, with "Gone".

Take a picture of this
The fields are empty, abandoned '59 Chevy
Laying in the back seat listening to Little Willie John
Yeah, that's when time stood still
You know, I think I'm gonna go down to Madam X
And let her read my mind
She said, "That voodoo stuff don't do nothing for me"

The song of which I'm most proud that I put out this year is "Ordinary Life", which is pinned to my profile. The video for it is fantastic, so please check it out.

But for my last post (I hope) of 2023 I present to you the cover I did of Nick Lowe's "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass", so very seriously reimagined that it has nothing in common with the original song, save the lyrics.

Let's not have a repeat of the 2020 Election. This all sucked.

I suppose that this year is summed up by this song more than any other. At least for me. I even won an award for it, which is both exhilirating and dissappointing becuase a) I won a freakin' award! and b) I don't think it's my best song for the year.

Nevertheless, here it is. "Woke AF (minus F)"

In January of this year I made my first ever attempt at writing dance music, and it turned out to be one of my biggest songs so far in my career. I wrote it for the group "World Order" but I released it myself insteadl. That's why the video is full of dancing robots.

As promised yesterday, here is the blog version of Radio Free California Episode 2352. It features the complete playlist, progbramming notes for the radio station for the next week, and a number of cheap (and occasionally vulgar) shots at the news stories of the day.

Tons of new indie music to close out the year with. Guillermo Ladd, Eaves Wilder, Dream & Onion, Wishy, Yard Act, Blank Spot, Nik Fields, The Umbrellas, Real Estate and much more, including a coda from Jon Batiste. Enjoy!

My blog version will be up tomorrow. I got better things to do today than blogging.

open.spotify.com/playlist/0s9D

A quick reminder: tomorrow at approx. 9am and again at approx. 9pm PST Radio Free California will be playing the new album by Field Medic called "dope girl chronicles"

I say "approx." because we always let the song currently playing finish before we jump in.
