I'm not here to judge those who don't like 'smut.'

I totally respect their right not to read my books. I implore them not to read my books. They come with a content warning for a very good reason. Some of my books are triggering and others are just plain nasty.

Just leave those books for my lovely readers to enjoy. They deserve some pleasure in their lives. Everybody deserves that.

Life is hard. Love needs to be harder to endure it. Fin.😘

More importantly, it's all endangered work. Writing anything is an at-risk activity.

Censorship trends hurt everyone. It may start with the low-hanging fruit of the marginalized voices and tricky topics. But, eventually, it spreads to kill the tree. Ultimately, it wipes out a forest.

While words can barely express all that love and sex are, romance authors and erotica authors have the skills to find the right words. We find the mot juste while other authors struggle with titillating text. And that's okay. There are many different specialties in the #WritingCommunity They are all equally valuable. But authors should support fellow authors regardless of whether they enjoy each other's writing. It's all hard work. (more...)

The real reason for this complaint is that we who write steam and erotica are the first easy entry to more stringent censorship of other so-called 'taboo' topics.

Humanity is an odd beast, finding shame in the means of its procreation. Besides, sex is about so much more than reproduction. It's the expression of our identity. It's a connection to another being on a level words can barely express.

But that's not what's behind all of this. There has always been a push to regulate and censor love. War is okay. Murder is fine. Gore is welcome. Love... No.

The romance genre endures, despite this, as it has for centuries. One of my favorite classic smutty authors is Shakespeare and the Bible is full of awkward love and sex. So I roll my eyes at all the pearl-clutching. (more...)

Telling any writer to stick to 'clean' romance (I wince at that term) is asking them to censor themselves. It's also preposterous.

Romance is never 'clean,' if you're doing it right. At the very least, you're likely to get grass stains on the hem of your pantaloons while riding your tandem bike with your beloved. Or that ice cream cone might drip a little on your crisp white linen blouse. Love is a delicious, dirty, sticky thing. (more...)

Is anyone else following the dialogue in the other Town Square™ about there being too much sex in books?

There's so much vitriol directed at the steamy romance genre and erotica. We who write what some call smut are writing for our audience. I love my readers. Shaming someone for enjoying a sexy book as a welcome distraction from the chaos of everyday life seems like a really poor use of time. (more...)

@cassandracstirling You'd be surprised. You really can revive it later. Two of my series grew from story bits I struggled with which languished on my computer for 6-10 years! Then I looked at them with fresh eyes and yay! I was totally into that world and at one with those characters. Keep those notes safe and let them age like fine wine. You can always re-fill the glass. 😉🍷

@cassandracstirling You're absolutely right. It's so important to make time for random bouts of inspiration. I've found that there's a reason the other story is screaming at me. If I give the attention it demands, then my brain goes right back to work on the interrupted one with zeal. I think it's because each completed story is a reminder you can do it. If I'm stuck on one, switching gears and finishing a different story that's more urgent in my brain really helps.
