I have seen Europeans confused by all the American casseroles. "Is this just a bunch of stuff thrown together?"
And yes, some people are basically trying to repurpose leftovers.
Or its people trying to recollect lost recipes based on faint images. IDK How else does one end up with potato salad that contains raisins?
Heh.
I once made goulash for a restaurant where I worked that was in New Hampshire. Actual goulash. From a recipe I learned when I was in Prague.
The locals had no idea what that thing I made was, but it wasn't what *they* called goulash.
@tyghebright Oooo. Real Czech goulash and bread dumplings. I miss Prague. @Sr0bi @northernbassist
There *is* a reason so many American dishes use canned and packaged foods. This is an interesting article.
@tyghebright @northernbassist interesting for sure. Thanks for sharing
"“There were some recipes that there was no time of day to eat it—a thing where you put something on Ritz crackers or something they do in the Heinz book where they combine apple jelly and ketchup,” she says. “They put it over ice cream. You really wouldn’t ever do that.”"
Yeah, a lot of "recipes" that clearly came from brainstorming with a pile of "things our company makes" on the table, which was done by men in suits who never cooked.
@northernbassist you smoke weed, I think you know the answer. 🤣

In the Midwest we called most of it hotdish, which may include but isn't necessarily the same as goulash.
