@NiveusLepus @tyghebright @FrankCannon the humble baked bean is both cheap and tasty. If you are poor, you can learn how to add spices etc. to make them taste less dull when you have had to have them more frequently due to financial constraints. 🙂

In the states, you have to look for Heinz Vegetarian Baked Beans.

In Britain, I think it's just Heinz Beans/Beanz.

You could make your own, but British baked beans are different from the way we make them in the States.

It's very common for them to have a bit of bacon or salt pork in them. Also, ours are quite sweet. Usually made with brown sugar and molasses. Often a bit of mustard. Much less tomatoey

One of my partners goes out of his way to make a vegan bean soup for me from time to time.

He's from a particular pocket of the deep south and it's always incredible.

@NiveusLepus @tyghebright @EnochianEntropy @FrankCannon I don't know if you have mushy peas in US but mushy pea curry uses baked beans, is vegan and absolutely amazing. I learned some meat-free options because of my fear of "could be poor" too.

Mushy peas are not a thing in the US. Can't even get the right kind of peas here. I've made them for myself, but find the sweetness strange.
