In college I took a print shop class taught by someone who had worked on the printing presses for the L.A. Times in the '40s.

He once picked up a jar of liquid, sniffed it, shrugged... and then held it out and asked, "is this turpentine?"

Chemicals had totally destroyed his sense of smell.
