I am convinced that anyone saying they didn't hate any of their high school teachers is lying. Still, trying to physically harm them is next level. Yesterday I was shot in the eye with a rubber band. There was some pain but no eye emergency.
Nobody would admit to it, so a VP hauled seven students to the office where apparently one confessed - after being given detention, that student will be in class again this morning. As will I 😞

@publickovacs

Unimaginable as I admired my teachers so much. Sorry this happened to you Mel.

@publickovacs
I cannot imagine being a teacher in this day and time. Glad your eye is okay. Take care today. And thanks for doing what has I think, become an almost impossible job.

@publickovacs

I never hated any high school teachers, I had a middle school teacher I didn't like. But, in elementary school I hated a teacher, in which I nearly punched. He used intimidation, was belittling. Basically, a bully. & as a child of abuse from a parent, I was very timid. So, you can imagine for someone who was timid & anti violence, how bad things were for a 4th grader to come close to taking on a large, older teacher.

@publickovacs
Oh Mel, this just sickens me. I'm so sorry you had to endure this. The abuse is beyond comprehensible, and it just gets worse and worse. I have a family member who is a teacher, she chose third grade. It's been an experience unlike any she's been through. I would hope this student apologize to you. Perhaps one day that will be so.

@publickovacs That sucks. Glad it wasn't serious.

Could he have been aiming at somebody else? Or were you the only target in the area?

At least you know who it is. Too bad you have to keep your guard up in your own class room.

@publickovacs @GeezerWench Glad you're OK. Detention at my school means multiple days out of class so I don't understand how the student is going to be back the very next day. That's not a sufficient consequence. I hope the student was at least told that could be considered assault which could have criminal consequences.

I'm sorry that you feel the need to be guarded in your own classroom but that seems appropriate. You should DEFINITELY act like you're in control.

@publickovacs @GeezerWench It's Friday. As long as today happens without incident your class should be back to normal by Monday. Hopefully, this student isn't stupid and won't hold a grudge over the weekend.

Also, you probably did nothing wrong but something rubbed her the wrong way or pushed one of her buttons. You may simply resemble someone that has wronged her in the past. Or she may simply hate being in school or the course you are teaching.

None of those are your fault. 👍
