1944 John Kay [Joachim Krauledat], German-born Canadian rock singer (Steppenwolf), born in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany
@T_Zen_Warp Thanks. I knew that and used that last year. This year, I copied from the current Wikipedia page.
@nealfig It's complicated. Kay was born in a country that doesn't exist any more, East Prussia. (It's now Kaliningrad.) Spent much of his childhood in W. Germany, but lived in Toronto from age 14-19. He then lived in Buffalo and L.A., but the main thing is, the first band he was in that had any success was the Sparrows, based in Oshawa, ON. However, Steppenwolf was organized after they moved to California. Two members of the Sparrows/Steppenwolf were Canadians.
@KamloopsBob Thanks. I saw that on the Wikipedia page for him.
Looking at the history of that page, "German-born Canadian" was changed to "German-born American" on Dec. 18, 2023โ, and "German-born American" to "American" on Mar. 12, 2024โ, no explanation for the first change but "Kay's birthplace is not relevant to his notability" for the second.
I think I might just skip nationality for these music-related birthday posts!
