@nealfig It's complicated. Kay was born in a country that doesn't exist any more, East Prussia. (It's now Kaliningrad.) Spent much of his childhood in W. Germany, but lived in Toronto from age 14-19. He then lived in Buffalo and L.A., but the main thing is, the first band he was in that had any success was the Sparrows, based in Oshawa, ON. However, Steppenwolf was organized after they moved to California. Two members of the Sparrows/Steppenwolf were Canadians.

Looking at the history of that page, "German-born Canadian" was changed to "German-born American" on Dec. 18, 2023โ€Ž, and "German-born American" to "American" on Mar. 12, 2024โ€Ž, no explanation for the first change but "Kay's birthplace is not relevant to his notability" for the second.

I think I might just skip nationality for these music-related birthday posts!
