Is anyone else scared shitless that we might actually default? I mean this is completely and utterly insane! I've been looking at Biden and Yellin's options in a realistic light and it just doesn't look good. Honestly, I don't see a downside to just ignoring Congress while it plays out in the courts. Or, agree to GOP demands and then renege. I mean, what are they actually gonna do?
There is a poll out, I don't know who ran it. It seems off to me. But it asks:
Do you think that Biden should negotiate with the house Republicans over cutting spending on social programs?
Yes said 68% Republicans
Yes said 44% Democrats
You see what's wrong here.
Rule 1.You do not negotiate with terrorists.
Rule 2. Biden could end this tomorrow with the stroke of a pen, give a speech, and end all this “malarkey.”
Agreed.
Guts that the Washington democrats don’t seem to have.
@dauphin87 @corlin but see that's the problem. Invoking the 14A will initiate legal challenges and stays, etc. While one part of me would love to see SCOTUS try to rule against Biden in the midst of a gigantic financial meltdown, the other part of me says WTF am I thinking? Biden is not going to ignore the judiciary the way Trump might. He's by the book, even if it means we eventually default. But he should get on TV and social media to directly address the public and lambast Republicans.
@hallmarc @dauphin87
I heartily agree.
This a moment to draw a line in the sand. Make a speech. Fire up the young.
@hallmarc feels like a charade the gop is playing like kids on a school yard bullying others until they get what they want. Don’t they realize that if the debt ceiling collapses, so does the stock market where they have a lot of money invested and oh that govt check they get every month for being annoying.
At the same time, I think they are underestimating Uncle Joe. Expecting him to bend to their will even after all they’ve done to him and his family. They are going to be in for a surprise.
@hallmarc they are acting on orders from that dipshit yam. So when the economy dives taking the global economy with it, they can blame Biden.
They don’t seem to realize that they are govt employees too. Govt can’t pay its bills, it certainly can’t pay them for doing absolutely nothing but making a bad situation which they caused, worse.
@Redskye572 they don't care about their salaries most of them. Many are independently wealthy or have spouses that could support them. Other less fortunate govt employees will get fucked first, just like last time. Then the poor and fixed income folks and then the rest of us.
@hallmarc (R)s don't have the guts to do it. If they do they will be universally hated and they know it. I hope they do actually, but suspect they will chicken out at the last minute.
@hallmarc
McCarthy doesn't have enough votes to raise the Debt Ceiling with only the GOP helping no matter what is offered.
He might not even have enough votes to pass a clean debt Ceiling raise with even if the Democrats helping
That is how F'ed up it is.
But the consequences of default or too grave to not pass it. it will just be an 11th hour passing
