Soviet military instructions demonstrating how to wear a pigeon vest, c. 1937
I have so many questions.
@estherschindler You carry the pigeons with you, and when you want to send a message back to your base, you attach it to the pigeon and it (usually) flies back.
@estherschindler You didn’t know pigeons are bulletproof?
Well, slightly more bulletproof than a Russian soldier.
@estherschindler Very cool. In 1937 portable radio was efficient but not very reliable so they brought back messenger-pigeon 'operators' who trained and cared for them. They had their own veterinary field-hospitals, too.
@estherschindler they wore pigeons on their belt, which was the style at the time.
@vozoto Let's bring back that style!
