I think I got blocked by someone. Huh.
It's a serious problem with social media - if you don't like what someone is saying, you can ignore them too easily.
Do that enough, and you'll never be exposed to anything the slightest bit challenging to your world view. You've made yourself ignorant, on purpose.
It's a puzzle. Personal growth is reliant on being exposed to new ideas and other opinions. Living in an echo chamber isn't healthy for your spirit.
Usually blocking 🚫 is done to limit someone from offending/ spreading info that doesn't match their perspective. Don't take it personally.
Like walking away from a bad conversation.
Like not finishing a book that isn't your cup of tea.
Bombardment of information requires many people to edit for their sanity. We are most definitely not an echo chamber here. This is our safe place.
Which is why I’m dumbfounded by folks who boldly claim “I’ve never blocked anyone” on CoSo.
Really?
Then your tolerance for rage, lies, racism & attack is unimaginable. After 2 yrs, my list is 100+
I left TW for that reason.
@LnzyHou @JulesofJoy @danalan I can't recall seeing anyone claim that they don't block anyone on CoSo.
I must have them all blocked.
@AskTheDevil @LnzyHou @JulesofJoy
Touche'
@AskTheDevil @JulesofJoy @danalan
I’ve seen many. Or they mention 2 or 3
@danalan The other end of that blocking stick is that if you _can't_ limit your conversations, you will rapidly be overwhelmed with trolls, arguments, and cacophany.
@AskTheDevil Offline!
I know. Some people should be blocked, but if you block someone just because you disagree with them, it's troublesome.
@danalan I agree with you on that, definitely!
What's that @th3j35t3r is always saying about finding the balance between good and bad?
@danalan I haven't blocked or even muted anyone on CoSo yet. I reserve the right of course, but even on Twitter I was loath to do that sort of thing (probably because I enjoyed returning fire too much😄 ). But CoSo is different: the tools largely render ass-hattery pointless, and trolls don't last here. CoSoNauts are typically good-faith participants. So I've managed on CoSo with literally no filtering so far.🙂
@Marc_T_Benedict
I haven't had to block anyone here either. I love to hear other people's world view. The clowns and trolls don't last here.
@danalan
Half the time I block people for reasons that have nothing to do with politics.
• they *never* interact, it’s always about them & their life
• they post horrific images or articles (I can handle fictional horror just fine)
• they attack CoSo members publicly instead of just blocking them quietly
I suspect havens like this are especially useful for people who are socially awkward, and blocking someone for awkward or poorly thought-out statements won't help them grow.
@danalan
I wish them luck?
I didn’t mention “socially awkward”.
If I see a post that makes me want to leave CoSo forever, I do the healthy thing, I block.
If I constantly see posts that read like someone’s personal diary with zero interaction, I’ll block.
@danalan On the contrary, blocking is encouraged as a necessary part of curating your CounterSocial experience.
100% of the people who blocked me did me a favor.
