This is a wonderful post about donating your kids' older toys to charity shops NOW BEFORE CHRISTMAS so folks who are desperately trying to buy toys for their kids can get a break.
We had to do it before holidays as a child, "to make room for the new" but after early childhood, my parents gave it up. I think this should become a widespread tradition.

My daughter-in-law would take the grandkids to "the toy shop" every couple months. It was the local thrift store. They'd donate the toys the didn't use much anymore, and pick out "new" ones.
The kids loved it. "Grandpa, we went to the toy shop and I got this: proudly showing off their treasures." Brilliant.
