Serious question:
What would you tell a very worried 22 year old women, that keeps up with political news, and is absolutely terrified that Trump will win and all that will entail. She is smart, well read, and a pretty good independent thinker. She doesn't want to run to another country, and she wants no part of a violent resistance. She puts the odds at 70/30 that Trump will lose.... But that 30% is freaking her out.
You can't predict the future.
But you can prepare for it.
Was my response.
That's the 64,000 dollar question.
It depends...
There's NO one set of instructions,
Generally: stay extremely flexible, make no long range plans. Get hooked up with a good support group. It is people that will save you not just tech, nor just information.

I'll second all of that, the million dollar answer!
I've always prepared for both shelter-in-place emergencies, and those where I have to relocate or become mobile. Self-sufficiency and flexibility are the keys there.
But ultimately, it's other people helping each other that will make all the difference.

Pretty much.
For the most part daily life will remain the same for a while. But very fast and very bad changes will happen. Like the worst natural disaster you have ever experienced… but you have no idea when it is going to hit.
I remember reading Masha Gessen’s 10 Rules for Surviving Autocracy
And if it gets really bad……
Yes
Give me 35 people proficient with different practical skills.
Only one or two need be proficient in weapons.
Anymore and you become a target.
Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction
@corlin @peeppeepcircus @p3R1n01D I don't recall the details, but there was apparently a time in prehistory when the total human population of the world shrank to about a hundred thousand. Look at us now.
@DavidKMresists @peeppeepcircus @p3R1n01D
Yep.
I don’t remember the time frame also. But it is called the single mother hypothesis. They measured genetic drift in mitochondria.
@corlin @DavidKMresists @peeppeepcircus
I remember learning a little about that period in history class, really interesting! If I remember correctly, the human race was split into two separate groups at that time, geographically isolated from each other. Does that ring a bell with either of you?
@p3R1n01D @DavidKMresists @peeppeepcircus
Hmmm.
I don't remember that part, but it makes sense.
@corlin @p3R1n01D @peeppeepcircus I never heard that either, but it's certainly plausible.
@DavidKMresists @corlin @p3R1n01D
here’s another thought to throw in, the start of climate change migration. that could break some community networks.
@peeppeepcircus @corlin @p3R1n01D it will be devastating to communities all over. What with some areas becoming deserts and lots of large urban areas under water, many millions of people will be on the move.
@corlin
I'll bet it is! And fear is damaging in and of itself, wears you down. Which is why, as we know, it's the weapon of terrorists.
A social media-style support network would be great, if I could figure out how to keep the assholes out. Like CoSo, but small-scale.
When I realized I wasn't likely to have kids, I also realized there's a world full of kids who could use an "uncle." I feel pretty protective of them all, so I wish there were something I could do to ease their fears. 💔
@corlin @p3R1n01D
How would you say one should prepare for it, if it does happen.
