If you’re rightly worried about mosquito-borne diseases like Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus, consider stocking up on these “Mosquito Dunks.” Place them in standing water to kill mosquito larvae. They’re made of bacillus thuringiensis, environmentally safe, and not toxic to pets or wildlife. I use them in drainage swales that retain water after heavy rains.
@cassandra17lina
Thank you!
@cassandra17lina I can't find any standing water but have a robust mosquito population. Have done all the water drainage/mitigation I can think of. I'm going to start tossing these around.
@cassandra17lina ...and how does mosquito biology work? Can I make them an attractive water source loaded with Bti and reduce their population?
They make it in granule form, too. I use those, putting a small amount into the birdbath tub and the bee-drinking-bowl.
@b4cks4w @cassandra17lina Have you checked your gutters? It's a source a lot of people overlook.
@Coctaanatis @cassandra17lina
Oh yes. Pulled them all apart, replaced damaged sections, added/replaced down spouts and tied those all into underground pipes that drain downhill a ways. Retrenched the foundation french drains. Wore out the shovel.
@Coctaanatis @cassandra17lina Did find a little squirrel nest up there, felt bad about taking that apart. Got over it.
Mosquito dunks also good for outdoor plant pot saucers, which can hold standing water.
I started using them when I recently found mosquito larvae in a plant saucer.
@ChelseaGirl429 @cassandra17lina I am also a big fan of Mosquito Dunks. They are such a simple and effective way to kill mosquito larvae!
@cassandra17lina Thank you for the reminder. I have papular uticaria (skeeter syndrome) & I need to plunk these everywhere.
