Just completed my first turtle rescue of this season. While my neighbors volunteer to help the sea turtles, I help the freshwater turtles who are trying to cross the busy road in front of my house get to the pond behind my house. Fortunately, a landscape contractor saw me running out and paused their truck in the road to help but other folks drove past without a thought. All this for an eastern chicken turtle that turns out to have a conservation status of “least concern.” Oh well…
@cassandra17lina Kudos to you! I just did one myself about 2 weeks ago. This one was pretty big and surprised me because all four legs and his head popped out and he tried running in mid-air. I honestly wouldn't have been surprised to have heard the Scooby Doo running noise while I carried him to the side of the road 🤣
@janallmac @BillyBones Back in the day, I was driving home from a job site and there was a massive snapping turtle crossing the small highway. My colleague was a biologist and between us, we wrapped it in a blanket so it couldn’t bite us and plopped it into a milk crate and carried it to safety. Not sure whether I’d risk that nowadays.
