Can any of you folks identify this raptor? I believe it’s a hawk, possibly one that was recently released from a local wildlife rehabilitation facility.

@cassandra17lina I'd guess hawk, but not a red-tailed hawk. I believe we have those birds here, though. There was a mating pair in my sweetgum tree this spring.

That would be my best guess. We get them around here a lot, but ours are Redtails with different colors and markings. I've only seen young ones land on the ground like that, but maybe just because the older ones avoid our yard with it's thick trees.

@cassandra17lina I thought it might be a young falcon but I don’t think the beak is shaped correctly. So probably a hawk

@cassandra17lina Based on a very similar picture from a wildlife cam on our property that I asked an expert birder to identify: a juvenile red shouldered hawk. But check if that bird is found in your area.

@cjewel Thanks - red shouldered hawks are definitely found here in eastern NC.
