I'm interested in the question of how or if there's a viable application for vertical farming.

The Netherlands lead the world in greenhouse farming of several high margin foods. Don't see any vertical farms there afaict.

Growing low margin leafy greens in that application? Why? Extend the growing season? To reduce chemicals? To have better genetic control?

Need a deep hole to reduce HVAC demand, beaucoup solar/wind... The sun and sheet plastic work better.

@b4cks4w Niche places. For instance I visited a beautiful one in Jackson Hole. There are actually a lot of warehouses where i am right now growing marijuana because security. But places I hang out a lot have extremely short growing seasons and extremely cold temperatures. And some are difficult to get to even with aircraft. As a niche thing it's extremely interesting. Even better if they were heated by geothermal and lights powered by wind. Places with high tourism, places with people studying.

Another unique feature. Idk if you can see but TLDR. Because the growing tables rotate through on bicycle chains in there the work level can be adjusted for height. They hire a lot of people who require wheelchairs which is kind of cool. There's no barriers. But yes, it's not ever going to replace farming. But if the demand is there and the food is fragile requiring fast transport and temperature sensitive it costs less and wastes less energy.

@b4cks4w I would think there would be some interest in a defense capacity too. Would be nice to be able to supply some remote bases in Alaska or Greenland or Faroe Islands or parts of Canada with fresh foods year round and not rely on transport if things were cut off. And also good to keep people employed (ie family members) as sometimes there are few opportunities in these places.

@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine @b4cks4w I did a lot of research into indoor farming a couple years ago because I made it a theme in my book Flint and Steel. Really interesting stuff.
