Idle thought about Mark Kelly (D-AZ) as a potential VP candidate ... If he wins, he takes a Dem vote out of the Senate. Arizona has a Democratic governor, so she would appoint a Dem to fill the seat until a special election. That creates the risk that a Republican could win in the special election and flip the Senate to the GOP.

Among her other duties, VP has chaired the National Space Council, an advisory body which, to be honest, doesn't have much influence on or US space policy.

That said, a Harris-Kelly ticket, with a retired astronaut as VP, certainly would seem to give more visibility in the campaign than it usually gets.

For what it's worth, Harris chairing the last National Space Council meeting.

@WordsmithFL I just said that to my son. I think Kelly would be a excellent choice.

@WordsmithFL

Other than Shapiro my other choice for VP if not for that risk.

@WordsmithFL It’s a concern, yes, but Arizona is gradually turning a purplish blue, and Kelly as VP could do a great job of helping campaign for a D running to replace him.

@WordsmithFL I love Kelly but I think it's unlikely that the ticket will both be from the West.

@Ironworker229 Good point. My personal choice is Jamie Raskin, although I haven't heard his name mentioned.

@WordsmithFL I like Raskin, but I think his health would be a liability. Or even the perception of his health.

@WordsmithFL I heard a rumor that Roy Cooper, current NC governor, would be her running mate. No idea if it was true. Just sharing it. It's early though.

@WordsmithFL as I understand it, our special election would not occur until the midterm in 2026, so at least we'd have a couple years to try to find the right replacement.

@Pitizenlyn Thank you for the insight. I'd hate to lose the Senate. It will be close as it is.
