Twitter is being flooded with people declaring that McCarthy's "concessions" promised the MAGA maniacs he'd abolish social security and Medicare and default on the debt ceiling.
That's not how government works. They can't pass laws without the Senate. Many Rs and all Ds oppose a default. If Kevin refuses to let a bipartisan bill to the floor, he can be bypassed via discharge petition - as one R rep already publicly reminded him.
I don't have the energy to get into this with people on twitter.
@RationalLeft I noted earlier in the day that any one member, R or D, can make a motion to fire the Speaker. If the Rs are about to do something diabolic, the Ds can topple McCarthy with just five R votes, and we're back to House Speaker Lollapalooza.
@RationalLeft Yeppers. I'm curious to see if any Rs (or Ds) can reach beyond partisan tribalism. I'm not staying up past 10 PM to watch Lollapalooza, but it would be amusing if I awaken tomorrow to find the deal has collapsed. π
@RationalLeft And the problem with McCarthy's weakness is that he's shown he will cave to their demands. What's to stop them from making more demands as the session continues into the year?!
@WordsmithFL I expect most Rs are desperate for this to end and won't ask too many questions right now.
But the supposed promises could easily collapse later, leading to a fresh rift and more R chaos.
