Twitter is being flooded with people declaring that McCarthy's "concessions" promised the MAGA maniacs he'd abolish social security and Medicare and default on the debt ceiling.
That's not how government works. They can't pass laws without the Senate. Many Rs and all Ds oppose a default. If Kevin refuses to let a bipartisan bill to the floor, he can be bypassed via discharge petition - as one R rep already publicly reminded him.
I don't have the energy to get into this with people on twitter.
@LnzyHou Or in this case fatalistic despair-mongering.
@LnzyHou Yup. It's impossible to get through to people who are motivated not to listen.
Why try? Who cares?
@LnzyHou I agree. I didn't bother trying.
@RationalLeft I noted earlier in the day that any one member, R or D, can make a motion to fire the Speaker. If the Rs are about to do something diabolic, the Ds can topple McCarthy with just five R votes, and we're back to House Speaker Lollapalooza.
@WordsmithFL That is indeed true... although some Rs are talking to Ds about joining together to kill the entire rules package Kevin promised the MAGAs.
@RationalLeft Yeppers. I'm curious to see if any Rs (or Ds) can reach beyond partisan tribalism. I'm not staying up past 10 PM to watch Lollapalooza, but it would be amusing if I awaken tomorrow to find the deal has collapsed. 😊
@WordsmithFL I expect most Rs are desperate for this to end and won't ask too many questions right now.
But the supposed promises could easily collapse later, leading to a fresh rift and more R chaos.
@RationalLeft And the problem with McCarthy's weakness is that he's shown he will cave to their demands. What's to stop them from making more demands as the session continues into the year?!
@RationalLeft
Save your breath. Anyone left on #twitter is not interested in rational discussion of bipartisan issues. It’s entirely about outrage, chaos and hate speech.
