Let me say up front that I am a BIG fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda. I loved In the Heights, thought Hamilton was absolutely brilliant, and really enjoyed his work in the Disney animated movies.

I just watched Encanto, after hearing such high praise for it.

Maybe it was all the hype, but this one didn't do it for me. Definitely my least favorite of his. 😕

I haven't seen it yet either ... but I have heard the soundtrack, and it is 🔥🔥🔥.

Didn't realize Lin was involved with Encanto until after watching it, though. Kinda prefer it that way; no expectations.

Maybe I need to go listen to the music on its own again. Being a choral director, I get emails from a big sheet music supplier all the time, like this week when they are advertising new choral selections from Encanto. Being that I chose something from Moana for my students before (also LMM) I thought I'd check the movie out.

I thought there were a couple cool songs, but it didn't come together as a show for me.

I have famously low standards at times, I admit, so I went into it expecting to enjoy it.

I read a piece someone shared here the other day where they kinda broke down why folks are identifying with it. S'good. Don't remember who or where, though...

I went in with very high hopes, given how much I enjoy LMM'S writing. It just left me kind of, meh.

The story and characters are fine, and I get why many people connect with it.
