Threatening the president of the US is a federal felony under United States Code Title 18, Section 871. It consists of knowingly & willfully mailing or otherwise making "any threat 2 take the life of, 2 kidnap, or 2 inflict great bodily harm upon the president of the US". Each count of Threats Against the President & Successors 2 the Presidency carries a maximum sentence of 5 yrs in prison, a fine of up 2 $250,000, & up 2 3-yrs of supervised release
