It's toxic codependency. You can't gloat unless you have someone to gloat over; you can't feel superior unless there's someone you can make feel inferior. If you deny them that, they feel shut out of their birthright.

Not everyone is exactly the same. Not everyone does things for the same reasons, and not everyone is unreachable.
Kick the unreachable, but don't cut every tree limb in sight because some are falling.
