Well, I might be screwed for a bit. I have spilled a drink on my laptop, which now won't turn on. This is bad because everything is very precariously held together in my life by my laptop. It's Sunday, so I can't even access tools to remove the battery for another few hours. Getting the money to replace said laptop will be tricky, so...

I'm going to be behind my time for a while.
This has been a really rough year, but this latest stupid is all on me.

Phone call to my bank now.
Fingers crossed.

@MLClark Yikes! My nightmare scenario. Making a safety copy right now. Hope it can be reanimated.

@MLClark I've done that. Cleaning up as much as I can and then simply waiting until the residue dries has resolved it.

You could try a hair dryer to speed up the process but I simply waited.

I've never tried this myself but placing a mobile phone in a Ziploc bag with rice to absorb the moisture seems to work. I imagine a larger bag with a laptop could also work.

@MLClark The key is waiting. That is a difficult thing to do for some people. May I suggest taking a walk or going for a coffee?

@MLClark

Oh, man. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, ML. I know it's not very helpful in solving the problem, but please know I'm sending all the positive vibes I can gather for an easy fix.

You give so much of yourself for others. I have no doubt your good karma account is full and helping to get things back on the right track for you quickly. 💞

@MLClark I teach tech to teenagers so Ive seen this happen often. Most of the time it resolves after it completely dries out. Hot chocolate is the worst, followed by apple juice.

Hoping for the best outcome!!!

@MLClark
Depending on what and how much you spilled, that could take days to dry, and might still leave residue that could cause things to short out.

If there is a PC repair place you trust, that might be the best course.

The chances are probably good that the hard drive can at least be accessed and copied.

@ceorl

That's exactly it, Ceorl. I'm waiting for a tech outlet to open, so they can clean the parts with isopropyl alcohol. I don't have the right tool to open the laptop itself, so it's on its side for drainage.

The tricky part is that I do not have much in my local account right now, and my Canadian cards don't work well at local outlets. First, I need to start a global money transfer, but for *that*, I need my 🇨🇦n security contact to wake up (my international # doesn't cut it). 🤞🏻 Fun day!

@MLClark
Good, I knew you were savvy and sensible, but did not want to stay silent about those shorts, even after drying.

I killed my old amplifier that way not long ago :)

Life tests you again :)

@ceorl

"Life tests you again"

As good a way of knowing I'm still here as any, I guess! Thank you for the sound counsel. The laptop was on at the time, so an irreparable short is still very much possible. Covering all bases by working on the banking issue while waiting for the 11am Sunday start for this tech kiosk.

Have a lovely morning yourself! :)

@MLClark

Sorry. That sounds bad.

About 2 years ago I spilled an entire glass of water into the top of my desktop computer, that sits on a stand by my desk.

I had built the computer myself so I knew the workings and could order the new motherboard, CPU and fans that were ruined.

Lesson learned. My water glass now sits on the other end of my desk.

I hope you can find a solution to your problem soon.

@MLClark

Oh no ML! I hate this for you 😔 The stress alone is awful but the practical implications of this sound very rough.

I hope the bank is responsive—please keep us posted.

🫂💜

@Minholkin

I have been on hold for 35 minutes, trying to get a security-check phone number changed so I can access the CIBC mobile app to start a global money transfer. I've been told I can't request the transfer by phone. So, it's been a fun Sunday so far. 🫂 Thanks, Min.

@MLClark Hey buddy! No matter what happens we’re all apart of a good community and we can face down these challenges together.

I’m sorry it’s been such a rough year for you, and if you ever need to talk it out, shout it out, anything, I’ve two big ears and no waiting.

I’m pulling for you!
