Was the Byzantine Empire the heir to Rome, or to ancient Greece?

Discuss.

@AkomoCombine Constantinople said it was the Roman Empire. That was countered by Western Europe.

Byzantine studies are a favorite pastime of mine.

@LiberalLibrarian

Yeah i believe Greece was a client state of the Roman Empire.

But this youtube channel-
youtube.com/@KingsandGenerals

... has a vast library of history and battles including the Byzantine Empire

And the very question you just asked

Was the Byzantine Empire the Heir to the Ancient Greeks?

I find it all fascinating and you can see the parallels in history.

@AkomoCombine That's what I'm watching now, hence asking what y'all think.

For me, Constantinople was the heir to Roman political institutions. The HRE, well, wasn't.

@LiberalLibrarian

Well the Greek language is still spoken today ,Latin - not so much, so one can argue that the Byzantines did descend from the Greeks as they adopted more of their culture than the Roman culture.

@LiberalLibrarian Byzantine Empire was the heir to Rome, but Rome was the heir to ancient Greece, so maybe the Byzantines can be viewed as grandkids of some sort.

@stephen_a_allen And, of course, it called itself "Rome". "Byzantine Empire" was a term invented by Western (Latin) scholars.

@LiberalLibrarian it's analogous to some disaster taking out the entire southern tier of the United States. Would what's left stop referring to itself as "The United States"? I doubt it.

@LiberalLibrarian Embrace the concept of "and." While they referred to themselves as Roman until they bitter end, one must not forget that Romand greatly admired Greece and adopted many facets of Greek culture as Roman. Roman elites thought of Greek as more intimate then Latin and many spoke both throughout Roman history. There is no way to have the Rome we know without Greece.
