The Very First Image of the Andromeda Galaxy Ever Taken 👁
Photograph of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) taken on 29 December 1888 with an exposure of 4 hours. Dr Isaac Roberts, an amateur astronomer and pioneer astrophotography, took this image using a 20 inch aperture reflecting telescope. Made by Howard Grubb of Dublin, the telescope was first installed at his home near Liverpool. This is the first photograph to show the spiral nature of this nearby galaxy.
@Jezibaba Breathtaking.
@danielbsmith Can you imagine their reaction at first viewing??
@Jezibaba I was trying to imagine it when I saw the photo. The beauty, the majesty, It's all there in that photo. What a wonderful way to learn about other galaxies.
@Jezibaba Wow. I suspect at the time they weren't really even sure what it was, or that it was outside the Milky Way,
