@Anouk Better to start it NOW then!
@JasonCrocker616 I keep thinking there’s got to be something and if there isn’t somebody needs to make sure this fuckery doesn’t happen again.
@JasonCrocker616 I’m asking stuff too bc I don’t know and I am PERPLEXED.
@JasonCrocker616 They have to go one approval at a time. https://www.npr.org/2023/09/20/1200705608/senate-tuberville-hold-military-promotions
@TheresaVermont awesome! Thanks for the link, now at least I feel like they are doing SOMETHING!
@JasonCrocker616 Still not great; it will take an estimated 700 hours of Senate floor time to work through. But they need to do it and call his bluff. He has to show up for those votes, too, or it's his bad voting record.
@TheresaVermont I would give each and every one of them a special pin, designating them as one of the ones who persevered to show my appreciation, except the "700 Club" sounds a bit suspicious to me, lol...
To get around a filibuster and speed up the process they pass a unanimous consent vote.
Tubervilles hold is turning something that could take a few hours to something that would take a few months
#politics
@Kinnison That part I knew, I just did not know that they actually WERE holding votes behind the scenes and getting things done.
I thought they had simply come to a standstill and were wringing their hands, moaning "Whatever shall we DO?"
Theresa Rowe sent me a link to an article on NPR that quelled my little "riot of one."
They should have started with the top postings, IMO, and made a big deal of it, telegraphing their moves to clip Tuberville's little nuts in the media, lol...
@JasonCrocker616 or wait until tuberville can't attend a vote #politics
Schumer had been refusing to hold individual votes for nominees/promotions. He agreed to hold votes for Chief of JCS, Marine Commandant, and I think the Chief of the Navy.
Tubervile is blocking unanimous consent, where they would be grouped together and all approved at once.
I don't know why he won't let the rest of the 300 through. Just don't adjourn the Senate until the 300 votes are held.
I am no expert on senatw procedures. But it isn't just about having individual votes. A single Senator can gum up the process and prevent any other legislation from happening. That includes the budget. At at any point they can just say they have the votes to filibuster and it just grinds to a stop
We are talking about 700 hours of tedious mind numbing process and voting without unanimous consent to approve 300 promotions individually.
@KGinKS @JasonCrocker616 @Kinnison
Exactly! Force the whole Senate to work harder and feel the pain of Tuberville's madness. Then, as well as making progress on confirmations, perhaps the whole body can pressure him to stop his childishness.
@sloudermilk @JasonCrocker616 @Kinnison
Assuming funding for fy24 is either done or the can kicked down the road again by Nov 17th, I would start introducing them then. No one is leaving early Friday to start your Thanksgiving week off. We will stay in session until we get through these delayed promotions/appointments. If we are still here on Thanksgiving I will buy you all turkey sandwiches.
@KGinKS @sloudermilk @Kinnison Hell, I'd even spring for the ones with cranberry sauce and stuffing for them!
@JasonCrocker616
Yes. And it’d take a looong time.
But I’m with you. DO IT.
