Am I right that there are bunch of different Mastodons? How does that make any sense?

@Ignatz The servers are individually owned, and they're joined in a Federation. CoSo was part of that, but they forked off years ago and are now independent.

@Ignatz Yes. So it's like a bunch of different islands and you pick your primary island. You can then talk to people on other islands unless your island leadership decides to cut them off or vice versa. You can also move to a different island that talks to different islands.

@Ignatz There are hundreds of instances. What's neat is that there's no identity validation on any of them, so a lot of major accounts are surprised to discover that they're already there. 😂

We hard forked from them five years ago, and it has proven to be one of the best decisions our admin made.
