We were talking about #, which I think of as the pound sign... # originally stood for pound weight, and later number. And £ the money, pound, was based on the weight of a pound of silver.
They both come from the symbol ℔, which represented the Roman term libra pondo, or pound weight. Thus, the abbreviation for pound = lb.
